War With Libya?! If so, it'll be for the oil, not the democracy!

The United Nations has approved military action against Libya. (http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/03/17/uk-libya-idUKLDE71Q0MP20110317)

The UN resolution not only endorses a no-fly zone over Libya, but also authorizes "all neccesary measures" to protect the civilian population. That is diplomatic speech for military strikes against Gaddafi's forces.

The French have suggested the strikes could happen within hours. The vote was ten in favor (including France, Lebanon, Great Britain, and the US) while five countries abstained (including Germany, China. and Russia).

Crude oil for April delivery rose 1.5 percent to $102.92 a barrel at 7:45 a.m. in London, after a 3.5 percent jump yesterday that was the biggest in more than three weeks. The contract is up 22 percent since the Libyan conflict broke out a month ago, and political tensions in Bahrain and elsewhere in the region have also fueled gains. Libya’s crude oil exports may be halted for “many months” because of damage to facilities and international sanctions, the International Energy Agency said March 15.

Hisham Yousif, chief of staff for the Arab League’s secretary- general, declined to say which Arab countries expected to take part, saying announcements should come from those countries as and when they deem appropriate.

I don't think we'll fight this war because we can't stand to watch a crazed dictator like Gaddafi torture and kill so many people. I mean, if that were the case, we'd have gone into Saudi Arabia, Iran, Korea, China, numerous countries in Africa and South America, and Wisconsin. If we invade Libya, it will be for the oil.
